Eu posso criticar a minha cultura! VocĂȘ, nĂŁo brasileiro, nĂŁo pode! SerĂĄ que isso estĂĄ certo? / I can criticize my culture! You, a non-Brazilian person, cannot! Is that right?

One day, living in Canada to study Film Production, I went to a Test Screening presented by another class. There was a short film with a Brazilian character. Instant happiness to feel represented in an English-speaking film, followed by feeling homesick, when a Bossa Nova (music) started playing on the background while she described Brazil in a poetic way. A few tears rolled down my face in silence, noticed by my classmate, who is Canadian. I felt comforted by someone, who wasn’t in the same situation as I was, but showed empathy by offering me a hug.

This week barely started, and already I have reflected upon two significant information about Brazil that caught my attention. The first one is over the Marco Temporal and the indigenous people’s plea to all Brazilian people, with the support of international public figures like Jada Pinkett Smith. The second one was a stereotyped video about Brazil, made by a British company.

Briefly explaining the connection between Canada, indigenous people, Brazil, and Europe: Canada is going through a process of repairing the damages caused to indigenous people of Canada, as a form of awareness about the fact. In Brazil, the opposite is happening. There is no awareness, in a political level, about the importance of the indigenous people to the environment, specifically to the Amazon Forest in this case. And Canada, like Brazil, is one of the countries colonized by Europe.

Whenever I watch a video, full of stereotypes about my country, spreading around the world in the speed that social media has, automatically I think about how many people propagate, as truth, bizarre concepts of what Brazil is like. But I’m the type of person that prefers to see the positive side, I remembered the classmate who gave me a hug after noticing how I was feeling, there was no judgment or any suggestion that I should go back to my country. When I started writing this, I wasn’t sure if it would be published, only a few people are reading this blog, and I asked myself if it was worth it dedicating my time writing over something so important for a small number of people to read. I kept writing, and focused on the positive side, if just one single person reads this, and it makes sense to them, it was worth my time. This is enough to me.

I’m passionate about Brazilian art, and I haven’t always appreciated it the way I should. My taste in movies, music, and books is exceptionally diverse, because I needed other cultures, I had to learn other languages to notice the complexity, the poetry, and the rhythm within the Brazilian Portuguese. It’s not my intention here to overlap my culture over others, I’m just pointing out the beauty that exists (also) in mine. We only appreciate what we had when we don’t have it anymore, that’s saying in fewer words all that I’ve felt living outside my country.

Jada Pinkett Smith is criticizing Brazil, by dedicating her time and giving her voice to the cause of Brazilian indigenous people. And that’s far away from being a bad thing. Brazil has flaws. To tell the truth, Brazil isn’t always good to the Brazilians, but it has its magic, and we miss our country when we are away, it doesn’t mean that everyone who left will want to go back. The irony here lightly slips, when I stop to think on the fact that I write this while living in Italy, after my ancestors immigrated from Europe to Brazil in search of a better life.

If I decided to write only about the bad things in my country, it would be like taking a sentence from a book, show it to someone, without the rest of the book, and say that is the absolute truth. A lot of important information would be omitted. We could even start a philosophical debate over omission being a lie or not, but to get into that it’s necessary a critical thinking, being capable to reach a conclusion on your own. From that we go to the next question: Is it possible to think critically over something, without having all the information?

I’m putting here part of the lyrics of the song “Tî Feliz (Matei o Presidente) 2” – Gabriel O Pensador:
*Translation: I’m happy (I killed the president) 2 – Gabriel The Thinker

I didn’t kill nor will I literally kill a president
But if all the corrupt people studently died
Everything would be different, there would be so much money
That we would walk on the streets without being afraid all the time
Your father wouldn’t be robed, your son wouldn’t become a robber
Your mother wouldn’t die on the line of the hospital
And your cousin wouldn’t kill himself on Christmas
Your teacher wouldn’t teach without hope
You wouldn’t want to move to another country
Your daughter would play with other kids
And nobody would have to kill nobody to be happy
Today, being happy is an illusion
And it’s the divided nation that kills each other for a political party
Without reason and clueless

Eu nĂŁo sou a Taylor Swift, estĂĄ tudo bem, agora eu gosto dela / I’m not Taylor Swift, that’s okay, I like her now

E assim, chego a minha conclusão no momento certo. Começou a tocar “Shake It Off” e vou dançar livremente escutando Taylor Swift enquanto contemplo meu pequeno, e importante, sucesso de ter terminado mais um texto que está pronto para ser publicado.

/

I was born on December 13, 1989. For the ones that aren’t Swifties (Taylor Swift’s fans) it’s necessary to say that I was born on the exact same day as she. For many years that coincidence had no importance at all. But after she became worldly known, I found out about her birthday, and I started questioning my capacity to reach success with my own goals. I compared myself to her, even though I’ve never dedicated myself to music like her. It was not about the music, it was about being successful, about accomplishments, creativity, and dreams.

It was never a question the fact that she is a talented singer and composer, That’s undeniable. The intensity of the conflict I felt, whenever I listened to “Shake It Off” or when I could relate to one of her lyrics, cannot be described in just a few words. While I admired her, I couldn’t admit to myself what I felt, it didn’t agree with the aversion to her success, because mine just wasn’t enough for me.

Let me be clear, my knowledge of Taylor Swift is extremely superficial. I never had a curiosity about famous people’s life. Gossip is just entertainment, and it’s easily compared to a telenovela in my opinion, I don’t believe everything that I read about someone, and I prefer to let an artist work be more important than what people say about them. The despise I felt for her had nothing to do with her. As soon as I learn to accept me for who I am, I started loving me, consequently letting myself admire Taylor Swift and her work without any conflict, that’s how it became possible for me to write this while I listen to “1989”, her album. In this case, it just makes sense getting inspired by her creativity when I’m expressing mine.

Who I could’ve been if I had permission to be who I am, if my creativity were free from the beginning, was always the reason why I never found happiness or contempt in careers that were imposed on me.

The woman that never felt the obligation to compete with other women, in a toxic way, please throw the first stone. Seriously! Throw the first stone
at the image on the mirror that society created to show women how they should be. Since childhood the reference of relevant women we saw on the media were always competing between themselves, in Brazil we had Eliana vs. Xuxa (TV hostess on kids shows), worldly it was Britney vs. Christina. The success of one does not cancel the other’s, there is enough room for all. I lost count of how many friendships I must’ve lost because I kept questioning internally, instead of asking directly, if the other girl was trying to sabotage me or if she really wanted to be my friend, imagine the paranoia created inside many girls’ heads after watching the movie “Carrie” and multiply that by 10, that was me.

In my adult life I observed many times people (of any gender) that prefer sabotage others instead of focusing on improving their own work, most of them were on a work or study environment. I noticed it’s less rewarding spending your time looking for other people’s mistakes than working on your own mistakes to improve yourself. I wasn’t much different from those people. All tough I was not looking for mistakes on Taylor Swift’s life or work, I just focused on the reasons why she is successful and wasn’t think of going after my own success. I know there is room for my success without comparing myself to Taylor Swift, or anyone else. And so, there is no better time than now to finish this, because “Shake It Off” is playing and I’ll dance to Taylor Swift’s song while I contemplate on my little, and important, success of finishing another writing that is ready to be published.

Isso eu nĂŁo mudaria nunca / That I would never change

A year ago, we were deciding and planning a big change. My life would never be the same again. One year seems like a little amount of time for so many adventures, mistakes, disappointments, learning, decisions, joy, friendships, and travels. Our lives were spinning while we were circling the world. We went through difficult moments, but each one of them had a purpose.

What I have lived so far is part of who I am now. And I wouldn’t wish for that to be different.

When I was younger, I lived accordingly to the idea that I would regret the things I didn’t do but wanted to, and not the things that I did and didn’t like. Learn from the mistakes until I get it right. In reality, it’s not that clear, and sometimes I wished I had done things in a different way. But how I feel, where I am, and who I am with now, that I would never change.

Eu nĂŁo estou aqui para falar de um filme / I’m not here to talk about a movie

/

There are scenes of Promising Young Woman in which I felt like I was contemplating a divinity: The one that looks after all women, offers a second chance to regret, and show that it’s possible to forgive (sometimes) under the condition of repentance, apologizing, and being a better person from now on. But I need to comment about the scenes that provoked an inner search about the parallels between moving on and a mental self-flagellation because the society still disappoints us daily in just being a woman in this world.

All these thoughts may bring a big question: Is there a life after?

I don’t mean religious believes, and if you didn’t understand this, I recommend you watch the movie.

– Trigger warning –

For those who will choose to watch it: You can stop at any time (It’s your right and your choice).

I know that many women are going to relate to the main character. And yes, I do believe in life after, but not for all of them. And it’s not their fault!

Not everyone will understand this, but everyone should at least try.

O Menino da Praia/The Beach Boy

Today I was thinking about the events of my life, how I left Brazil, lived in Canada, and now I’m living in Italy. All of that in just one year.

Coincidentally, I watched a video on @ygorpalopoli Instagram today, he talked about the movie “Call Me by Your Name”, and how relationships, even the ones that end, have an impact in our lives. I end up making a connection between his video and the relationship that I never had with a boy that I met when I was a kid spending my summer at the beach. He never knew about his impact on my life.

I met the boy many summers ago, that typical summer crush, the romantic idealization inspired by the movies, improbable and sometimes unreachable because of the long distance. I have no idea if he felt the same about me, because I never told him about my feelings. Every summer, for many years, I met him, and it was the same thing, just a summer friendship. But, without knowing, he influenced my musical interests, simply by listening to different genres then the ones I was used to. My curiosity set me free to explore different kinds of music without the need to define a single musical pattern for my taste. During his teenager years, he had long hair and was the drummer of a local band, that opened my eyes to noticing people that dressed in different styles, and expanded my thoughts about exclusion, acceptance, and social patterns.

A chain of events that makes perfect sense now – but at the time was just random – resulted on 21 years ago me meting the guy, that is my husband today, I saw how he stood out from my other neighbors by his choice of clothes and haircut. And instead of leaving to my imagination the possibility of his interest on me, I learn from my past (beach boy) crush that it would be worst not knowing, then getting a no for an answer. So, after talking to Vitor (my husband), and checking if he was in fact interesting, I told him how I felt about him. He was my first boyfriend and today he’s my husband, so many things happened between he being my first boyfriend and now my husband, but I’ll never regret saying what I feel when it’s something good.

Back to the story about the boy, already a grown up, I spend a few days at the same beach and heard about him (the beach boy), he was well and living his life, I felt happy for him and carried on with my life.

In the end of 2021, mentally tired because of the pandemic, questioning all my career related choices, too much free time for my fast-paced mind, I started searching online names of people that I lost touch with, one of them was the beach boy. I found out that he (who was about my age) passed away a couple of years before that random search. Gone too soon! I felt the bitter taste of mortality during the following weeks. How that could make such a profound impact on me was beyond my understanding ate the time. The sentence – Life is too short – had its weight on me that day, but it was nothing compared with the heaviness siting on my chest: The dammed and necessary question  -What am I doing with my life?

On that day it wasn’t possible for me to imagine how a simple online search would change me for life. A series of big decisions were made after that day, including the one to leave Brazil.

Brazil, beautiful country, and dangerous for women, including one with privileges like mines. Living in good neighborhoods, studying in a private school, and affording my own car didn’t protect me from the violence directed at women, didn’t even protected me from verbal abuse or gaslighting. I used all my privileges to move to Canada and now to Italy. All the privileges that weren’t enough to by my safety inside a society where sexism and prejudice are very much alive inside the culture. Just using the word ‘alive’ in relation to the violence present in my country, makes me think about the people that aren’t alive because of that, what would their impact on our world be like?

And the beach boy, that was taken too soon by a disease, what would his impact in the world be like? And the impact that he had in my life, without even knowing, what will I do with that? How will my impact in the world be like?

Following my train of thought, feels necessary to comment on the importance of entertainment, content creators, creative people. The insightful thinking provided inside our minds because of what they inspire.

The beach boy will never know the difference he made in my life, but I will honor that, saying what I feel when it’s something good with no regrets.
